My other interests ...

Outside work history, archaeology and geography/ecology are my main interests in life and I have spun enterprises off from those interests.  When I am not working I like to use my time to make a contribution to the town where I live.

  •     History - mainly medieval, Tudor and Stuart
  •     Local History - round the Midlands and the Heart of England
  •     Local archaeology - although I am handicapped by an intense dislike of grave robbing I take part in archaeological enterprises (mostly geo-physical) in my area
  •     Geographical/ecological events - mainly organising and leading walks and explorations and running lectures and day-schools with a geographical or ecological theme
  •     Writing for hobby and general history magazines
  •     Museum management and curatorial work - at the Almonry Heritage centre in Evesham
  •     Books - writing my own and editing, proof-reading and publishing others
  •     Air displays and classic aircraft - my favourite day out
  •     Music - early, renaissance, baroque, folk and Celtic
  •     Walking - hills, moors and exploring villages, towns and cities on foot

Memberships

  •     Royal Geographical Society/Institute of British Geographers.  Both professional and recreational
  •     Vale of Evesham Historical Society.  Webmaster and publisher
  •     Vale of Evesham Civic Society.  Dedicated to improving the amenities and presentation of Evesham and the Vale
  •     Cromwell Association.  An educational and heritage charity interested in the seventeenth century
  •     Simon de Montfort Society.  An educational and heritage charity interested in the thirteenth century.  Treasurer
  •     Imperial War Museum.  Furthers my interest in classic aircraft
  •     National Army Museum.  Very good education centre and venue for external lectures and day-schools (used for its Civil War facilities)
  •     John Hampden Society.  Another educational organisation interested in the seventeenth century
  •     English Heritage.  Membership is a good investment for walkers and explorers and a source of history-based events
  •     National Trust.  Another useful investment
  •     Ramblers Association.  Very useful for the odd occasion when we can leave others behind and lose ourselves in the countryside
  •     Battlefields Trust.  An essential support for the work I am doing on restoring and preserving the Evesham battlefield
  •     Ordnance Society.  I lecture on early black powder artillery
